Artist Statement

My work explores feminine empowerment, rage, and authenticity through contemporary still life and figurative paintings. Throughout history women have been the subjects of paintings by male artists in a way that objectifies the women and strips the models of their autonomy. By creating beautiful works of art that focus on diverse aspects of womanhood, my work gives women back their autonomy in an authentic and honest way.

The Sanctuary Series centers around the sanctuary spaces that women create as seen through a mirror reflection. The mirrors act as portals granting a glimpse into the intimate and sacred worlds, where women are free to access their most authentic expressions. Using oil paint to capture diverse feminine forms in intimate settings and positions, I reference the sexualized portraits of women throughout history while also subverting the male gaze.

The use of colored glass, incense, and other objects full of ornate filigree, references churches and temples as places of divine connection and transcendence. The prismatic effects outside of the reflection amplify the instability of the outside world and the stillness within. This work is a meditation on transmuting rage through the pursuit of pleasure, magic, and ritual as a revolutionary act.

My work encourages the women who view it to love all aspects of themselves and release any shame they have around the nature of being a woman, leaving my viewers feeling empowered and proud and sovereign. My paintings also foster understanding by giving a glimpse into the intimate and sometimes taboo rituals that women develop around things like self care, menstruation, and the pursuit of pleasure and gives viewers permission to love their own feminine aspects.
